A Girl's Gotta Do, What A Girl's Gotta Do....

This week, I've done my best to block out distractions (Twitter, Blip, unannounced studio visits, Twitter, long lunches ...did I mention Twitter??)

If I seem quieter than usual, it's only because I am working hard behind the scenes to re-launch our Mitzvah Artistree website. As anyone who has ever designed a website knows, the process feels a bit like moving a mountain.

The www.mitzvahartistree.com website showcases our popular B'nai Mitzvah Invitation collection. Our invitation designs are literally flying out the door lately and our original website couldn't keep up. We have spent the better part of 4 months redesigning and restructuring the site to make it more user friendly and visually beautiful. It has been a massive undertaking, requiring hours of focused dedication from my wonderful staff. The website is almost ready to re-launch (fingers crossed & holding of breath). I expect we will go "live" any moment now. It looks fantastic and we know it will do good things for my art.

In the meantime, la la la la la....I can't hear you. Shhhh.... I am busy working.....;)

Cool Winds Wrap Me

I beg the summer sun to linger longer (the music's still playing...come, dance with me?) but it only laughs as it dips deep and slides electric into the shadows...leaving me standing naked and alone.

Cool winds wrap me...can't get warm.

I shiver.

Sheltering leaves blanket me as the last of bluegreen summer scent floats towards fingertips and drips down bark, over bare shoulders....

A Comfort Beyond Words

You must habit yourself to the dazzle of the light and of every moment of your life...
~ W. Whitman

I always feel an inherent sadness as the last days of summer slowly roll by. August into September, this transition, leaves me aching for the warmth of summer sun, gone too soon as we slide swiftly into September. I find myself missing the heat well before it's even gone. Yes, a true artist's soul, complete with just a touch of melancholy angst.

In times of transition, I look to surround myself with comfort of mind, body and soul. A fresh new book... Rest, if my body will accept it...Music to bring inspiration or to steady my breathing... Those I love, pulled even closer to wrap my heart warm.

And then there's Walt.

I carry a small condensed pocket classic edition of Walt Whitman's Song of Myself with me everywhere I go. Tiny enough to fit within my hands, each morning I sift through the tattered dog eared pages looking for phrases of inspiration, energy, purpose to begin my day. Each evening I look once more for his magic words to calm, to soothe, to reassure. A master at visual imagery, Whitman's epic poem, a celebration of self as it relates to the magnificent beauty of the earth, sky and world around him...wonderfully exuberant, spiritual, soulful, sensual, playful, peaceful and at times, a little heavy handed as well. All elements and words combine with grace...part of his charm for sure and for me, the ultimate guilty pleasure...a comfort beyond words.

Farewell beautiful summer sun....

You Just Know It...When It's Right

Several weeks ago, one of my favorite people on twitter, Steve Finikiotis (@finikiotis ~YES, follow him! He is elegance, eloquence, intelligence and compassion combined!) posted a link to a marvelous interview by Charlie Rose of iconic French Photographer, Brigitte Lacombe. It was a long interview but well worth the time investment. Lacombe offered a poignant and informative insight into her process of capturing the world's most beautiful and interesting faces on film. The interview coincided with the launch of her newest book titled 'anima/persona'.

Lacombe, arrestingly beautiful in her simplicity, was clearly anxious in front of the camera. I listened and watched intently as Rose skillfully led her through a series of gentle and intimate questions that allowed her to talk freely about her passion...it was fascinating and endearing to see her soften as her words began to flow with more ease. The more she spoke, she charmed me (and obviously, Rose as well) and by the end, I considered myself a fan for life.

Lacombe explained how capturing an image is most often instinctive...there are no words to describe 'how' it occurs, rather it is the feeling of the moment, without thought. Her job , she said, is to put her subjects in the best light, acknowledging that the best photos are ones where the subject is fearless, giving up his/her will, in essence surrendering to the moment. When it is 'there', visually, you just know it.

Naturally, as an artist myself, Lacombe's words resonated deeply. Some of my best work has come during moments of surrender. Creativity often flourishes when the walls of boundary and constraint are gently lowered. For me, when I am painting and the colors mix and melt and the line and design flows with grace and purpose, well... as Brigitte would say, you just know it.

A mysterious large and heavy package recently arrived on my doorstep. As I peeled away the wrapping, to my complete surprise, I discovered I was holding Lacombe's book, 'anima/persona' within my own two hands. A belated birthday gift from my family, proving that they actually do hear me when I wax poetic about the things that move and inspire me. This magnificent book, a collectors dream, is a stunning collection that I will forever treasure.

She Swayed Me

Am here between the earth and sky, floating, rolling, wondering why. It's taking so long to be found...I barely breathe... no sound.

But then, you find me in the grass, hold me tight and make it last. Take my hand in yours, you'll see...it fits just right, this part of me...

It's clearly meant to be.

You'll feel me slide beneath your skin, anchored to your soul within. Setting sun and sinking sky, wind sways but you won't question why.

You'll only know that this feels right, this swaying onset of nights light. So lay with me, let's dream, let's sleep...sway with me, into the deep.

I'll Be Here...

When the dawn is due,
Before the rays reach me,
I'll be here.
Waiting and watching.
Looking and hoping.
Maybe I'll be the one...
To discover the mystery of you.

Staying Connected...

…Don’t it always seem to go
That you don’t know what you've got
Till its gone… ~ Joni Mitchell

Not to be melodramatic, but for a few alarming hours yesterday, Twitter crashed. For those of us who have embraced this social media phenomenon, Twitter crashing felt like losing a most beloved well worn address book, complete with all the handwritten notes, scribbles, business cards, doodles, cross outs and redirect arrows in the margins.

Twitter is about connecting and sharing with people. And while I acknowledge that my initial focus for tweeting was professionally based and that many purposeful business contacts have indeed been born because of it, what has evolved for me personally is entirely different.

There are many creative, smart and witty folks within the Twitter community…the key is finding and following the quality among the quantity. I am fortunate to have followed a handful of truly lovely strangers who I now call, friend. I find it fascinating that meaningful, fulfilling relationships can be forged even with limited communication tools…In 140 characters or less, we have shared our work, our passions, our music, our inspiration, our art, our politics, our poetry, our words…ourselves. The character limit forces conciseness of thought in each exchange…alluring on its own and yet occasionally frustrating…sometimes it seems, there is so much more to say.

Twitter’s crash, brief as it was, opened my eyes to the reality of a semi virtual world where, in the blink of an eye, we can all be involuntarily disconnected. Special ones who have gotten under my skin (oh, you know who you are), I take this moment to tell you how real and dear and valuable you are to me. You fill me and for that, I will now hold you even closer.

Artist Inspiration~ Egon Schiele

Austrian Painter, Egon Schiele (1890-1918)

"At present, I am mainly observing the physical motion of mountains, water, trees and flowers. One is everywhere reminded of similar movements in the human body, of similar impulses of joy and suffering in plants." E. Schiele

I had the pleasure of closely viewing many of Schiele's drawings and sketches at the Neue Galerie in New York a few years ago. His figurative works are easily defined by the detailed bone structure he managed to capture...the bones, muscle and joints beneath the skin. Notable was the absolute delicacy of each often heavy, line...a talent to express strength, grace and sinew all within the same line...don't you think?

Having studied and worked alongside fellow Modernism heavy weights such as Gustav Klimt and Oskar Kokoscha, many of his portraits, erotic in nature, have a tense beauty that seems to come from within. Schiele favored geometric shapes and his portraits have a twisting, bending, jerky, angled presence about them. Favoring a muddier palette, his work was often punctuated with jolts of intense color. His paintings and sketches are both visually stunning and unnerving at the same time.

Fall For You

In his dreams day and night
Crept inside his soul, snuggled in
Surprised them both
How simple it was
To surrender to it, and freefall...

Free Style

One morning, while on my recent trip to the ocean, I woke before sunrise and walked to the beach. A quiet place, the beach, at that early hour, I savored those moments of solitude…just me, my ipod in hand, walking along, searching for shells, in anticipation of the rising sun.

I soon came upon a man who was floating along in the cold Atlantic current. At first, I barely noticed him, his presence was so calm and quiet, as if one with the waves. And since one of my favorite things to do is to simply watch people as they move within their own space, I silently sat at the place where the softness of sand meets the smoothness from receding waves. Me, a meditative, quiet form, sitting patiently, breathing slow, listening to my music, just watching him float and roll with the water flow.

It was some time before he noticed me there, but when he did, I perceived a brief moment of self consciousness wash over him. He casually looked around to see if it might be someone else I was intently gazing at…something else within my path of vision. Resigned, he now left the passiveness of floating and began to swim…beautiful long arm strokes, kicking legs slicing the surf spray. He dove headfirst through oncoming waves…stood, shook his head, ran his fingers through his hair, spun around and around. He was clearly enjoying being watched, being noticed. And I smiled because I was joyfully watching him, happy to give him this moment in the early morning sunshine spotlight.

And it occurred to me, isn’t this what we all want? To be noticed in a gentle, non obtrusive way ~ To be appreciated for the good we inherently possess and have to offer ~ To not be judged by others for decisions we make and paths we choose ~ To be allowed the freedom to just be, in stillness or movement, however we wish within our own spaces?

We all move about so quickly in the daily chaos that is our lives. Take a moment to breathe deep, notice, appreciate and share the beautiful, unusual, unexpected gifts that are all around you. They are there…just open your eyes and ...watch.

Do You See Yourself?

I went to the sea to rest my soul, restore my body and refocus my mind...

Each early morning, I rose solitary, walked towards the waves with the still sleepy warmth of the sun on my face. Barefoot, I walked along the edge of the breaking sea as it gently washed over my toes.

I searched for seashells fresh from the sea. A specific search...a mission of love. I scooped them up with dripping fingers and cradled them, protected them, loved them. Do you see yourself in my collection? Look deeper...each represents those who have made an impact on my life or brought something to me....the gifts of understanding, a fresh perspective, laughter, patience, creative inspiration, simple kindness. If you've gotten under my skin (you know who you are;)) look even deeper....

When I was tired, I sank in the sand and thought a while. I meditated about my art and the business of art...about how to lead my studio gals to where we need to be. I reflected on the love of family and friends that wraps tightly around me...I am truly lucky. I resolved to let loose things I cannot change. I asked for balance, wisdom, grace and clarity to find me, if I call.

I went to the sea to rest my soul, restore my body and refocus my mind...Thank you for your company. It was a pleasure to find you there, precious gifts at my fingertips.

Much love,

Shell

Sway Me

Take my hand and sway with me.

I'll float along in the current of you...

Pull me close,
Feel my heartbeat staccato pulse dance.
Hide me in the folds of your love.
Keep me warm.
Sing to me and share your words.
And when my eyes grow heavy,
Let me rest...cover me in cotton and sing me to sleep.

Sway me.... I'm yours.

To The Sea....

Anyone who knows me well, knows that I need only a few things in life to keep me truly happy; The love of my beautiful family & friends, painting time, a good run, DARK chocolate, the warmth of the sun on my skin and my fingertips dipped deep in the ocean at least once per year.

I am headed to the beach today for much needed rejuvenation. I'm a tired woman (artist, boss, mama, wife, friend) and I need to rest. A friend of mine recently said to me, " You are like a spring constantly flowing out...sometimes the spring needs to rest from giving to the world and those around them" Indeed. I loved that image...it resonated deeply with me and really, I couldn't have said it better myself. It is exactly how I feel.

So, I am off to the Sea. Will look for beautiful Seashells to add to my studio windowsill. Will think of all of you in the quiet of my mind...you're never far from where I am. And I hope to come back restored, refreshed, at peace and filled with new creative inspiration to share.

Much love...

Come Paint With Me...

"I found the experience to be enlightening. It was like reading a book while writing the story...Phenomenal experience."--J.

"Come paint with me" I said.
"When?" he said.
"Anytime..."
And with this, the idea was planted.

My friend, Jason had never painted with watercolors before and wanted to give it a try. I loved the idea of having company while I painted, so I invited him to visit my studio. We set up the paints, I let him choose his brush, I turned on the music and after a brief lesson ("...add more water to let the paint flow free; less water gives more control; if you add white to blend your pigment you'll have a more opaque finish...") we sketched and began to paint.

You learn alot about another person when rambling with paintbrush in hand... Jason is great company. He laughs easy and he tells a great story. Sometimes it was silent all but for The Shins or Pat Metheny or Jesse Harris or John Legend playing in the background. It was the most peaceful, calm moments I have had in some time. Thanks J...

Come paint with me...
Who's next?

Scars Are Beautiful

I love scars. Roadmaps of a life, honoring personal challenges, reminding us of who we used to be, and how far we've come. It's often the little things that make us stronger and ultimately, more beautiful.

Summer Camp

Summer camp

Just seven years old, and the long, warm summer days were filled with:
Swimming in the cold, murky lake and learning to braid damp hair.
Hearing my voice for the first time, I sang into a microphone, Midnight At The Oasis with all the wrong words.
Pretending to like archery...
The thing I remember most was playing jacks and marbles in the afternoon. There was something comforting in the way the side of my small hand would graze the earth before gathering the scattered jacks.
Moments of predictable, orderly chaos. Familiar and safe, filled with laughter and sunshine.

I stop some where waiting for you."

Sneak Preview....New Watercolors and the Inspiration Behind Them

A new design I am working on...a simple watercolor butterfly that will grace the front of one of our newest products, Women's T's! The T-shirts arrived this week and are gorgeous! And, just in case you think I would feature my art on just any old T-shirt, let me share that we searched for months, tried on sample after sample to find the perfect shirt that was worthy and trust me, these babies are lovely...really beautiful, super soft cotton with great cut and fit. I'll let you know when they are ready for viewing.

And on a not entirely unrelated note, I'd like to give a shout out to a new Twitter friend, whose beautiful piano compositions kept me company during my painting yesterday. His music (my favorite is "Pristine") was the backdrop during my latest creative burst and so I just wanted to say, "Thanks Loren! Your work is cool". Check out a sampling of Loren Digiorgi's work at http://www.lorendigiorgi.com/

And speaking of Twitter, yes, I tweet and yes, come follow along! I'll admit I am borderline obsessed, but all good things deserve ample attention! Where else can you share your thoughts about life, inspiration, art, studio time, family, sleep or lack thereof?? I ramble often about all of these things. Besides, there are many wonderful people there, looking to connect and share with you. Come join the fun! http://twitter.com/shellartistree

The Best Personalized Wedding Gift

Sometimes the best ideas come straight from our clients!

We recently launched a new Jewelry collection and have been offering our beautiful glass lockets with several of my art designs tucked beneath the glass. We envisioned this being a great gift that a Bride could give to her Bridesmaids, especially since each locket can be personalized with a different art design. I still think this is a brilliant idea. But, guess who has been scooping these beauties up? The Grooms! Seems they had a better idea in mind…a one of a kind Wedding gift, from Groom to Bride on wedding day.

We are pleased to offer our glass locket collection, now available with your wedding date printed on one side, and a design from your chosen Ketubah on the other.

New Hamsa Ketubah

I have wanted to paint a Hamsa Ketubah design for some time. Clients often ask for this ancient design, and I like to take their ideas and use that as my design inspiration. Typically, the Hamsa design, a symbol of the hand with five fingers (some say the fingers represent the five books of Torah) was worn as an amulet for protection. My Hama design takes its design cues from Song of Songs and features some of my most popular symbolic biblical imagery.
You can view all of my ketubah designs here!

Beautiful Wedding and B'nai Mitzvah Jewelry

I met Dara Adams about a year ago. Funny, smart and truly genuine, I was instantly charmed by her as well as her beautiful and unique jewelry designs. Each, like tiny works of art, I felt a connection, artist to artist. When I first saw her Sterling and Glass Lockets, I immediately envisioned my own watercolors swimming beneath the glass. I bought one and inserted one of my own tiny watercolor designs into the Locket. Locket Love followed...everyone commented on the uniqueness of my artistic necklace and I knew I was onto something. The opportunity to work collaboratively with Dara is a thrilling one for me. I love her work and am so pleased to finally offer her extraordinary hand made jewelry designs to my discerning clientele.

The entire Jewelry collection is unique and charming...two of our necklace designs can be personalized, making them a fantastic gift choice for bridal attendants and Bat Mitzvah girls! The collection is so affordable, you can even treat yourself.

Ketubah Tree Wedding Invitations Client Testimonial

"Hi Shell,

Just received the invitations! They are beautiful! From speaking with you briefly, reading your blog and looking at your website, you seem like a lovely person as well as a wonderful artist--what a great combination! You were empathic, professional, and went out of your way to be helpful. I will be very happy to recommend you to my friends. Please convey my thanks to Sarah and Kari for their help as well.

Judy"

Thank you, for your kind words Judy!
Painting is a process so beyond just laying down pigment on paper. For me, it is first about a mood, a feeling, a moment of inspiration that triggers the creative in me. Once heightened, it is then about light and music and comfort...all the things I need to set the tone to be able to create. Next, my mind moves to line and form and shape...designing the vision, bringing life to the concept on paper. Finally, I mix the colors, create depth and add texture. If I do it all right, that is, be true to myself, my original vision and my heart, then I usually make magic.

Feedback is so important to any business, but maybe even more so to the Artist whose soul inhabits a piece of everythings she creates. Thank you, to all our Wedding/Mitzvah Invitation and Ketubah clients who take a moment out of their day to tell us their thoughts. Your words mean so much and are taken to heart and appreciated by all of us here in the studio.

Make Your Furniture Jealous...

Like most true artists, I find my best inspiration often comes from my long list of obsessions.

I have been a fan of British designer, Paul Smith for many years. His collection of colorful rugs is instantly recognizable...contemporary rug designs in wool and silk. When last in SoHo. I visited The Rug Company to see his work up close. It is astonishingly beautiful. My personal favorite, Swirl...gorgeous in the jpg snap above, but positively yummy (covetable) in person.

The Word is "Writing"....

During a recent talk with a close friend, I was asked to quickly name the first word that popped into my head. "The word is, writing", I said. This word came to mind instantly, the moment I was asked.

I love the written word and I enjoy nothing as much as sharing in this way. For me, the deepest relationships of my life were forged via the words that flew between us...the bond that only the written word can create.

I am inspired tonight, to try to write more. I suppose that my Shell Artistree blog is the obvious place for this, although I honestly do struggle with my voice on this site. (How personal should I/can I get? Where is that line between being Shell the Artist and just plain Shell, a woman who has something interesting to say?) This is my hearts dilemma.

Anyway, speaking of inspiration and words flying between us, ...I am reminded of a favorite poem by a famous Romanian poet/artist named Nichita Stanescu. Not sure if it will resonate with you in the same way it does with me, but there is vivid imagery and energy in Stanescu's words. They move me and so, in the spirit of inspiration, please allow me to share...

SENTIMENTAL STORY

Then we met more often.
I stood at one side of the hour,
you at the other,
like two handles of an amphora.
Only the words flew between us,
back and forth.
You could almost see their swirling,
and suddenly,
I would lower a knee,
and touch my elbow to the ground to look at the grass,
bent by the falling of some word,
as though by the paw of a lion in flight.
The words spun between us,
back and forth,
and the more I love you,
the more they continued,
this whirl almost seen,
the structure of matter,
the beginnings of things.

Ketubahtree.com Website Redesign Complete

Have you seen my baby lately?

So proud to announce that we finally relaunched the Ketubah Tree website last month and the feedback has been staggering. Originally designed in 2003 by my web design guru, Stephen Rosen from Sitemind.com the original website, although a visually beautiful backdrop for my ketubah designs and wedding products, needed to be updated to reflect our ever changing collection of fine art products. Stephen and his team created a gorgeous new website that showcases my fine art in a simple way, while also taking advantage of behind the scenes SEO best practices. The website is easy to navigate, client intuitive, Search engine friendly and really beautiful to boot.
Take a look and let us know what you think!

I know...I disappeared. But I have good reason!

This is what happens when gals my age decide they should join a women's soccer league.

Tore my calf muscle, which means no running, no soccer... 8 weeks of rest, physical therapy and that oh so stylish black boot. But hey, it could be worse...I've always been a glass half full kind of girl.

I initally took some time off from the studio, but I am back, crutches and all, and working hard with Kari, Sarah and the rest of the team on our newest artistic Spring projects.

Forgive my absence. Good stuff to follow...

Finding Inspiration

Ice cold winter days that sink into dark skies far sooner than I would like are the catalyst for todays Finding Inspiration entry. Cold to my bones, I search for and seek the warmth of the sun. Be kind, drop me in the dry desert and let me melt. What could inspire the artist in me more than the smoky cinnabars, aubergines and amber rays of the desert landscape? Where others see desolate dryness, I see only rich warm colors that pull me in...you've gotta look closely to find supple green among the sand and rock. But when you train yourself to see past the vastness of mountains and red rock, you'll see the beauty of the big sky and a depth and range of colors that will leave you breathless.

Simplicity

Often times, it's the simplest things that make the most impact.

A stunning wedding bouquet idea of Origami Tulips mounted on bamboo skewers...the clean lines are anything but boring. Shadows add visual interest. Delicate and precise...this is good design, well edited, simple and complex all at once.

Back To (Play!) Work

Great to be back in the studio after a really relaxing, restful Winter break with family and friends. I missed this place...it is my sanctuary and returning after time away always feels like coming home.

All of us in the studio are working hard on individual projects as the new year begins. Thanks for your patience as we streamline our B'nai Mitzvah invitation collections and websites. We'll keep you posted as we launch our newest designs and products.

Wedding Season is right around the corner. If you have a Spring wedding planned, now is the time to place your ketubah order. By end of January, historically our studio is quite busy with Ketubah and Vow Certificate orders. Kari is available to answer any questions you may have...if you don't see the answers to your questions on our website, just give us a call. We'll be more than happy to assist you!

If you find yourself local to us in Northern Virginia and want to visit our studio and see my work in person, please touch base and set up an appointment. We meet with clients M-F from 10-2, by appointment only. We have limited evening and weekend hours set aside if that is more convenient for you.

Best to everyone as we head into 2009. Let's make it a great year!

Like the ripples on the water, I am reminded that life flows along...continues rolling from minute to minute, day to day, year to year. This constant movement is a beautiful thing. Life is all about holding dear the past which helped make us who we are, enjoying the moment which is now (the greatest gift we have) and anticipating the mystery around the corner, the promise of the future yet to be. I am fortunate in that so many deeply incredible people have been part of my life so far...taught me, inspired me, changed me, moved me, loved me. I wish the same for all of you.

All my love, as we roll along together, into 2009.

Studio Open House- a few more pics

Great show everyone! In spite of lousy weather, we had a wonderful turnout! We sold many original watercolors which will make way for new ones to be framed out. Sold out of the boxed Notecards ( THANK YOU!!) which was fascinating for us, as this was a new test product. We'll reprint at once and fulfill your orders quickly if you ended up having to special order some packs. Shows like this are really invaluable to an artist- It gives me a quick read on which designs resonate most. I received some great feedback on some of my new paintings and I was able to share my day to day product lines with many who knew I was an artist, but didn't quite understand how it all fit together in a business sense. Thanks to all of you who came out on two dreary, cold and rainy days in support of me and my art. I'm lucky enough to do what I love and as always, it means a great deal to me to be able to share that with the many dear friends I have in my life. For those of you who couldn't make it out, I'm tentatively planning another show this February at the Nelligan gallery. If you wish to be on our studio emailing list please drop me a line ( michelle@shellartistree.com) and I will add you to the list. Hope to see you then!

PoetreeStudio's Redesign Begins

"Seek Me" Original Watercolor Painting by Shell Rummel

For those of you following, Friday is "lock the artist in the studio until she paints something" day. Although I have no new watercolors to show for today, I have been diligently working on a different labor of love. Poetree Studio is my online portfolio for my watercolors...it's the place I post my non wedding related work...my soul works. It's true that when I paint, it is usually with the focus of adding to my wedding collections, either via a new ketubah or vow certificate design, wedding invitation or gift print concept. But occasionally, I do just allow the non business specified thoughts to flow and I just zone out and paint. I enjoy "small works", tiny vignettes, a snapshot in time...quick paint flow to capture mood or color or line. I am probably at my best during those rare painting sessions. Painting makes me feel really, really good.

But Poetreestudio needs a facelift. Designed in 1989 by my most talented web guru, Stephen Rosen from Sitemind.com, it's time for the site to be updated. Many works have sold and are not marked as such. Many are new and need to be added. So today, the updating is begining. Victoria and I have been working hard to update content, and when that is complete, Stephen will rework his magic and make Poetreestudio a more modern visual stunner befitting a website that is almost 10 years old. Stay tuned...and watch the transformation unfold over time naturally, all without Botox.

Writing Your Own Wedding Vows

Although we provide many beautiful and poetic text options for our clients to choose from, did you know that you can also write your own custom English text for any of our Ketubot or Wedding Vow Certificates?

Writing your own text/vow statement is an act of true love. Often, our clients have the desire to create this personal statement, but feel daunted by the challenge of puting their deepest feelings in writing. We encourage you to take the challenge!

Below are a few tips compiled from a fantastic resource blog called "I do I do...The Marriage Vow Workbook" that will help you write wedding vows that are compelling, authentic and enduring, and are symbolic of your permanent and beautiful commitment to each other.

1. Write vows in the positive (e.g., “I will treat you with respect,” instead of, “I will not be disrespectful toward you.”).
2. Write vows in the way you speak. If you’re plainspoken, write your vows that way and leave flowery prose to others.
3. Write vows that have a sense of the sacred. Such vows come from deep within and you will willingly take them on. If a vow seems to be a directive, a command, or an ultimatum, set it aside and choose another.
4. Write vows that are broad enough to apply to your life today and your life fifty years from now.
5. Write Vows that make you feel joyful, inspired, excited, and optimistic.
6. Write vows using bold language. Examples include “I will,” “I commit to,” “As your partner/husband/wife/friend/lover I intend to . . .”
7. Write vows that matter to you and your partner that authentically express what’s in your heart.
8. Once written, read your vows aloud to make sure the language flows well; revise any awkward sections or phrases that you might stumble on.
9. If you intend to memorize your vows, keep a copy of them with you during the ceremony, just in case. Or have the officiant lead you through them, with the officiant saying them first and you repeating them afterward.
10. Coordinate your efforts with your officiant. Remember that some religions have restrictions on the vows that can be used in a marriage ceremony. Your officiant may be able to offer suggestions for your vows and incorporate them seamlessly into the ceremony.

Paper as Art

Stunning paper installations by artist Jacob Hashimoto, courtesy of designboom.com

Watercolor Perfection

This is wonderfully productive, this "lock the artist in her studio until she paints something halfway decent" idea. My gals should do this more often. Lot's of ideas that have been swirlin' around in my head are making their way to my beloved paintbrush via my hand. I've got good light, Pandora love and ideas flowing free...love when it all comes together like this.

Silencing Shell...

Came to the studio this morning...ready to paint and the most lovely email was waiting for me...

"I'd like to say that finding your website and Shell's beautiful art has been no less than soul food. I don't think I have ever seen love brought into light and art so seamlessly before. Please do pass my thanks to Shell for illuminating a dark night of web surfing and homing in on the perfect Ketubah design."
--Laura, London, UK

I must say that although I am easily wowed, I am not often left speechless. "Soul Food" !! That's what took my words. Thank you to Laura, future client, for inspiring me to keep painting and for filling my soul to overflowing today.

It's Painting Time

They've actually done it. My studio staff has literally locked me in my studio and told me I cannot come out until I have painted something new.
Hmmm...
At least I have crackers. And good light.
So now, I paint...

Boogie Shoes

"While browsing Martha Stewart’s wedding website for something new and unique, I came across a charming and fun idea that I will definitely use if I’m ever a bridesmaid again. I think almost every bride saves their dress and shoes from their wedding day, so why not have your bridesmaid sign your shoes as a special memento! There is nothing better than finding different cultural traditions that you can incorporate to make your special day unique!"

Martha Stewart Weddings says: "Try a who-will-marry-next tradition that Turkish brides have been practicing for generations. Before you start down the aisle, have your single bridesmaids (or any female friends or relatives who marry) autograph the sole of your bridal shoe. After you've danced the night away (and tossed your bouquet), legend has it that the person whose name has faded the most will be the next to marry."

Inspired By Shell...Home

At a glance, a sampling of beloved art and objects from my home that inspire the artist in me...

I enjoy tactile, dimensional, textural objects that I can feel with my fingertips. Soothing colors and organic lines thrill me. I love all things cactii and natural light. My art collection is quirky, eclectic and ever changing. I am prone to getting bored quickly and my home is often my canvas, reflecting the revolving door of new ideas, passions and interests that come to mind.

When Less is More...Elegant Bridal Accessories

"As a designer I appreciate all forms of art, and I particularly love to find simple and elegant jewelry designed in some unique fashion. I often find a jewelry designer that I love and purchase pieces that really capture me. The other day I found myself browsing Tacori’s site. They produce high end jewelry that you can find advertised in almost every bridal magazine. The unique thing that captured me this time around was not their beautiful engagement pieces that are easily recognizable, but their whole collection of Bridal accessories. The line is made up of a few small to large pieces full of flowers, Swarovski crystals, and pearls. They seem more affordable than some designer bridal jewelry because they aren’t necessarily scattered with expensive jewels, but have a more simplistic and feminine feel. It’s a great fit for someone looking for popular jewelry designer while trying to stay within a budget."

Color Inspiration

I feel about color, the way many people feel about food. Color warms, comforts, inspires, energizes, soothes. It fills my soul in a way that not much else can. I spend alot of time working through the color choices I make when creating a new painting. The palette is usually specifically chosen to convey a mood.

Many years ago, my brother in law gave me a precious gift. A wonderful book that I often use to help me organize a palette into cohesive, pleasing combinations. Called, Colors in Context by Naomi Kuno, this incredible color guide, well worn with time, allows the reader to view color by themes, such as Colors of Literature, Art, Music or History, Ideology and Mythology, Nature and Meteorology. The idea is that specific colors convey all sorts of vivid mental images and messages...Colors move us and we have a conscious recall of different times and places, based on color. Different nuances of color evoke powerfully different memories for each of us.

While we all can easily identify simple emotions with color (passion=Vibrant Pink, Energy= Orange) it's much more interesting to see how color and more abstract themes work together.
Free associate with me for a moment...a soft pale green known as "Garden Pool" might bring words like cool, graceful, relaxed to mind. Whereas, "Storm Green", a dull gray green instanly feels heavy and damp. "Fresco Blue", a light greenish blue reminiscent of Italian Frescoes, might make you think, fresh, delicate and translucent.

It's like learning another language. When I paint, I just know what colors I need to add to others to bring to light the exact mood I am after. More instinct than thought, my brush swirls in and out of my watercolor pans; a dab of Vanilla White brings warmth, a touch of Baltic Blue adds depth to other colors that may seem flat without it. When it works, it is pure joy.

Color Palettes...Trends for Weddings this year and beyond

"According to The Knot, steel gray will replace chocolate brown as the accent color as a top wedding trend for the end of 2008 into 2009. Gray is so classic and versatile! The Knot advises you to introduce the color into your stationery, either in the typeface or paper, and then gradually build it into your reception space by way of slate gray table accents and pewter-toned bridesmaid dresses with a contrasting sash in eggplant, pale pink or butter yellow. Shell's Color Field II ketubah or Wedding Vow Certificate, with its watercolor wash in steel gray and butter yellow would be perfect in keeping with this years color trend."

Beautiful and Simple Wedding Cakes

"For all of you locals out there, we have a lovely little bakery around the corner that I’d like to share with you. I have used Victoria’s Cakery on many occasions just by stopping in and seeing what is available in their case. Although I’m usually there for their small 6” cakes to take home that day, you can’t help but notice all the other beautiful cakes and desserts they offer. They have beautiful yet simple cakes that are of course delicious, and traditional looks are never out of style. I’ve been to quite a few weddings that do not even offer a slice of cake, but have different desserts the couples are very fond of instead. Consider Victoria’s Cakery’s other desserts (tea breads, cheesecakes, scones…yum!) for a non traditional wedding reception. The staff has a great personal touch, which is something we strive for here at our studio as well. Located in the heart of Old Town Fairfax City just a few short blocks from Shell’s fine art studio."

Looking for a Unique Ketubah?

Looking for a truly unique Ketubah that is different from all the rest? Interested in a statement piece? Months in the making, we have finally launched our extraordinary etched glass ketubah...an innovative concept that reimagines the traditional wedding Ketubah or Anniversary Gift in a very modern yet elegant way.

Shell, in collaboration with Nolan Everitt Designs, proudly offers a gorgeous new etched glass Ketubah design ... an exciting new concept in Judaic art! Featuring Shell's time-honored and beloved "Bashert ... Meant To Be" Ketubah design, Nolan has skillfully etched Shell's design into glass. Through Nolan's specialized artistry, the glass etching expertly captures the subtle shadings and ethereal quality of the original Tree of Life concept artwork. Using state of the art printing technology, the Ketubah, Vow or Anniversary text is custom printed on fine art paper, which lays flat under the etched glass design. Shell's beautiful color palette designs highlight subtle gradations of color which show through the clear glass, enhancing the etching and adding an extra layer of depth and intricacy to the overall design. The result of this artistic collaboration is a stunning work of art, perfect for modern art collectors and discerning Jewish wedding couples of all ages who appreciate the elegant and covet the unique.

This beautiful ketubah is available exclusively through Shell Artistree and Gallery Judaica. Gallery Judaica is a beautiful upscale gallery located in the heart of Los Angeles. Click here to order an Etched Glass Ketubah

Under the Chuppah in 1987

"Under the canopy, September 6, 1987. This photo of my husband and I under the Chuppah reminds me of the day we took our wedding vows 20 plus years ago! The Jewish tradition of standing under the Chuppah recalls the tents of our nomadic ancestors and reminds us of G-d’s presence at the wedding. The Chuppah at our wedding was a simple floral arrangement over an arch. Many years later, I have the privilege of working at Shell Artistree and knowing that our beautiful hand painted silk Chuppot will become a traditional part of many of our clients wedding ceremonies, and that their memories will be preserved forever in countless treasured photographs."

Beautiful Form

As many of you already know, I collect pottery. I have amassed quite a collection over the years that is near and dear to my heart. Inevitably, friends always ask where I found such unusual artistic pots. Although I collect (stalk??) from a variety of artists, one of my favorite artisans is Jonathan Adler. I must confess that I truly loved his work way back when he was just a potter...there was a natural simplicity to them that spoke to me. These days, Adler has become a prolific style icon, designer and TV personality...his groovy collection grows by the minute and now includes rugs, pillows and furniture. I am partial to his Relief pottery collection...beautiful organic shapes and forms which fancy up even the most humble lump of clay.

Beyond the Wedding License...Words From the Shell Artistree Staff

"Shell's Ketubot are set apart not only by their unique designs but also the lovely text choices that are offered. The texts that Shell has written have evolved from the ancient orthodox text into poetic texts about love, joy, faith and growing closer together. These poetic texts seem to make the Ketubah more relevant for today's couples and broad enough to appeal to couple's from a non-Jewish background as well.

I think that this is a beautiful tradition and even though I am not of the Jewish faith I would love to have a Ketubah or an equivalent when I get married. I love the idea of having something more special than just a wedding license...artwork that is beautiful and poetic that can be displayed in the home as a reminder to the couple of their commitment and love and also as a declaration of love to everyone who enters the home."

Bright, Beautiful, Bold Colors...words from the Shell Artistree Staff

"A new wedding trend that’s been huge in 2008 and doesn’t seem to show any sign of slowing down in 2009 are bright, beautiful, bold colors. We’ve all seen them used heavily in bridesmaid dresses and flowers this year, and in some cases, even in metallic variations. Color requests for invitations and ketubot haven’t been any different. Our designs such as Bashert… Meant To Be, Tree of Life and A Story Like Ours I, are great reflections of the bright purples, greens, and even reds we’ve been seeing this year.

Since Shell focuses on creating joyful, bright paintings to reflect the emotion and excitement connected to your big day, it’s not really a surprise that this year’s color trends fall right in line with her ketubah works of art. My personal favorite happens to be the Color Field VI Ketubah design, because of its bright red and orange hues. Reminds me of a sunrise, and since it comes in four other color variations it’s an easy ketubah to match with your personal wedding color palette!"

Shell Artistree Plants 168 Trees in honor of our clients

Big news to share...

In late June, we embarked on a new partnership with The Arbor day Foundation, a fantastic organization that actively promotes Tree planting/reforestation programs all across the country. Through our partnership, the "Reforestation" program allows us to plant one tree in a forest that has been devastated by forest fires, drought and climate change for every eligible sale we receive. Since we are a paper company (Wedding and B'nai Mitzvah Invitations, Ketubot and wedding related products) we wanted to find a creative way to give back and reduce our impact on the environment. Planting trees in honor of our clients is a proactive step we have chosen to take to show our commitment to doing the right thing. We activley promote our partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation on our website and through company literature so that our clients realize they can purchase from us with confidence knowing that we take our responsibility to the earth seriously. We had estimated that we would be able to plant about 100 trees per Quarter to start, but our sales surpassed our expectations and we were able to plant 168 trees...68 more than we had anticipated! Talk about a success! Our partnership with the Arbor Day Foundation has been very well received by our clients...they recognize our efforts to give back and feel good about purchasing from a company that understands the bigger picture.

Keep checking back and watch our forest grow!

Beautiful Autumn Inspired Ketubot...Words from the Shell Artistree Staff

"Fall is in full swing here at our studio, the trees are beginning to change colors and we’ve all begun to pile on the light jackets and sweaters. Wedding season is beginning to slow down, but I’ve personally been invited to more Fall weddings than ever before, many of them with Autumn themes included in their colors and floral arrangements.

I especially love our seasonal Ketubot and find that they follow the Fall theme nicely with the vibrant colors and trees. Certain designs are particularly popular at this time of year including Bashert V, as well as our I’ll Be There Autumn design. Another great option is the Unfinished Symphony II. Fall happens to be my favorite season, and I’m happy to see the beautiful seasonal colors celebrated in so many of our client's weddings as well as many of my friend’s weddings!"

"Avant Garde" Ketubah Design Wows LA Rabbi...Words from the Shell Artistree Staff

Destiny I Ketubah by Michelle "Shell" Rummel

"As a customer service specialist, I love working with our clients from Los Angeles. Our California clients seem to have a special connection with Shell’s artwork. Perhaps it is her modern aesthetic that seems to draw so many L.A. brides with such enthusiasm for Shell’s designs. I had a lovely conversation with one such particular bride, Bonnie, this past week. She called after her wedding to tell me how impressed her Rabbi was with the Destiny I Ketubah and how he spoke about the “Avant Garde” aspects of the design during her wedding ceremony. It gives me special satisfaction knowing that the artwork not only has a special connection with the bride and groom, but also to the clergy which have such an essential role in signing such an important document."

It's been a long while since we've posted on our blog. Our summer wedding season is always busy, but this past one kept all of us running with little precious time for the writing, which I love. With Fall upon us, I am reminded to slow down and take the time to get back to painting and writing...things that are dear to me.

I'd like to wish all of our clients and Retail partners a peaceful, happy, sweet and healthy New Year. Thank you for your continued support of Shell Artistree this past year...we love what we do, we love working with clients to design ketubot or wedding products that exceed expectations and we love providing top notch customer service with a smile. L'shanah Tovah, Happy New Year, to you and yours.

"All My Love" Original Watercolor Painting, by fine artist, Michelle "Shell " Rummel

I am a member of many different art related websites and forums. From time to time, I add my two cents and leave a relevant comment. Here is my latest from a recent post featured on The Painters Keys, in a discussion about one of my favorite painters, Gustav Klimt.

"For my fortieth birthday, all I wished for was a trip to New York City to visit the Neue Galerie to see Gustav Klimt's work with my own two eyes. My wonderful husband granted me that wish and I can tell you that I literally had tears in my eyes as I stood inches in front of Klimt's famous portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I. Aside from the impressive size, what struck me most was the light that seemed to emanate from it. It's a remarkable piece, dazzling really. Standing with my eyes just inches from the canvas, this privilege afforded me a close-up look at each precise brushstroke and I found myself viewing this masterpiece in microcosm for the first time. In reality, the work looks nothing like the mass produced replicas that saturate our marketplace. As a long time (and long-distance) Klimt admirer, it was a joy to realize this and the best birthday gift I have ever had."

-Shell

And two days later, I received this fantastic email from a Painters Keys reader:

"Michelle - I just LOVED your painter's keys entry that showcased "All My Love" Just beautiful! I spend (probably too much time) browsing the internet looking at what other artists are doing - a lot of it starts to looks all the same - and this piece is one of the most original, fun, whimsical, lovely things I've seen in awhile. You must have had so much fun creating it. As I looked at your work and Klimt's, it made me think that you have found a way to admire his work and yet make it totally your own. Keep at it and BRAVO!"

Bar & Bat Mitzvah Invitations Even Your Kids Will Love

A few years ago I went searching for Bar mitzvah Invitations for my son, Jordan. We looked at literally hundreds of traditional yet bland designs. Jordan was uninspired and matter of factly asked why I just didn't design his invites myself. And so I did. He specified the colors and I worked up something that was clean and simple that showed off the cool kid he is.

This of course inspired me to create a collection of unique and artistic invitations that would appeal to kids just as much as to their parents. We've spent alot of time in the studio, tweaking the designs and colors so that they would be just right. I think we've got it and I'm so proud to offer these beautiful and very special Bar and Bat Mitzvah Invitations for your celebration.

Take a look, and let us know what you think! http://www.ketubahtree.com/lifestiles_mitzvah.asp

"I have had an extremely positive experience dealing with you, Michelle, & staff. Everyone has been very friendly & responsive & replied in a very timely manner. The website is very user friendly. When Michelle thought there may have been an error in the Circles Abtract II sample (which it turns out there was... III was sent inadvertently, but was marked II) she offered to send another one free of charge. I been planning to order one of Michelle's Ketubahs from other sites, when I happened to stumble upon your site. I am so glad that I did find your website, which offered a more extensive selection of Michelle's works, including the abstract ketubah we ordered. There was more flexibility w/ text and phrase options and a very personal touch. Thank you for the excellent service; we would definitely recommend you!"

Modern Symbolism

Most artists are used to being asked what the inspiration may have been behind a specific work of art. If only I had a nickel for every time someone asked me, "What were you thinking when you painted this?" ...Truth is, I love to share my thoughts about my paintings and I am honored when asked.

My ketubot all originate from my original watercolor paintings. Traditionally, the ketubot that I create have some symbolic imagery incorporated into the design. Sometimes, the imagery comes from biblical visual references such as the beautiful imagery from Song of Songs, although admittedly this is not my first source. More often, the symbolism stems from my own life and love, my own point of reference for what is truly important as two enter into a committted relationship. For instance, I often depict butterflies in my work, not only because they are lovely to paint but also because to me, they represent individual freedom of expression...a quality I personally hold dear. Mine is a more modern approach and I love finding unique ways to symbolically depict traditional, and sometimes not so traditional Marriage and Commitment concepts. We all have our own personal list of qualities that we feel are essential for everlasting love. I take great joy in finding visual ways to depict these symbolic concepts in my art.

Washington Bridal Expo

We Loved meeting the hundreds of brides and grooms who showed up at the Washington Bridal Expo at the Dulles Expo Center last weekend. What a crowd! It was the biggest we've seen at an expo so far.

We handed out over 900 wedding artistree brochures and also met with many Jewish couples who were excited to see our Ketubah collection and to know that we also have a website devoted to ketubot

Lot's of interest in our Wedding Wishing Tree Tags which are a fabulous alternative to a traditional guest book concept. Here are a couple of close up shots of this really fun new product.

Here's some shots of Sarah, Ann Marie and Kari in action. None of yours truly this time...I was the one taking the shots.

Happy Clients

"Dear Shell,

We wanted to thank you for creating a beautiful ketubah for our celebration! We found your website by looking for "ketubah dance" online because we wanted a ketubah that would capture the grace, rhythm, and movement of a dance, something that we felt would be fitting to capture our relationship. We were thrilled to find your design and were very impressed with your personal response and willingness to customize the wording according to our preferences. The ketubah preparation kit that you offer was particularly helpful, since it made it easy to display it during the event and get it ready for framing. I hope that other couples find a design among your ketubahs that feels true and personal to them, and I wish you much success in the future! Warm regards,"

"About 2 months ago you completed our ketubah design - the Fulfillment I. We loved the ketubah and it perfectly expressed what we feel for each other and how we envision our destiny together. Thank you for making the process so pleasant, taking care to update us on every step and ensuring a timely delivery for our big event.

I also wanted you to know the shock that came after the ceremony. My mother, who is an artist as well, presented us with a gift - an oil-on-canvas portrait of Gil (my husband) and I. She began this painting when we first got engaged and could not have possibly predicted that the ketubah of our choice would present the same image - of two people embracing and holding each other. It was amazing! It was one of those moments when you just know things were meant to be this way. I've included a link to a few pictures I've uploaded to show you what I mean.

I wanted to write this email to let you know that sometimes your art will touch people in many many ways that are unpredictable and everlasting. Thank you for everything!"

Kind words from our clients...

"Thank you for doing such an incredible job on our Ketubah. We were in an awkward situation because our Rabbi had his own personally designed Ketubah. We loved the Life Dance design and wanted to incorporate some of his words into our own Ketubah. Michelle Rummel and everyone at Ketubah Tree were so helpful and designed a personalized ketubah with our Rabbi's words on the top of the tree branches. It looked beautiful and sounded beautiful. My husband and I read our Ketubah together under the Chuppah. Everyone was very touched and we thank you for making the Ketubah such a wonderful part of our wedding experience. "

"Thank you so much for all your work on these( wedding invitations, printed vellum, table cards and placecards)! It has truly been a pleasure to work with you and we are so extremely thrilled to have found you! It's fun (as well as kind of bizarre!) to see our names printed on a wedding invitation and we're so happy that these will be so indicative of our personalities and passions. Greg is an avid painter himself and we are both great lovers of art and nature. These invitations couldn't be more perfect. Best wishes to all of you!"

Shell, Kari and Ann Marie represented Wedding Artistree and exhibited at the North Bethesda Marriott Washington Bridal Showcase this past weekend. We met several hundred newly engaged brides, complete with their entourage...bridesmaids, best friends, MOB's and a handful of resigned grooms too.

Non Linear Discovery

In most circles, I am known for my organic and abstract paintings of trees and landscapes. But, a few years back I became enamored with another subject. Lines.

It is fair to say that I became obsessed. I painted them vertically, horizontally, skinny, thick, rigid and wavy. I painted them in acrylic and watercolor...some only tiny inch long vignettes and others up to four feet long. I sketched them with pencil and ink. I played with unusual color combinations. I dreamt the colors and images and each day became more and more inspired to paint.

Those that knew and loved me became...um...concerned. "What's with the Lines??" they asked. "I don’t get it!" they commented. "I miss your trees" said my 10 year old. It seemed that everyone but me wished for my return to those trees.

With only my own quiet optimism, I decided to submit a Line painting into a competitive juried art exhibit. I titled it, NonLinear Discovery in honor of my journey outside my comfort zone. Can you imagine my face when I received the phone call saying I had won the Best In Show Urquhart Award? Can you imagine the faces of my doubters when I shared my news?! Oh yeah...that moment was really sweet.

Who can say why that juror chose my painting? A non linear moment in time where my artistic vision resonated perfectly right with that particular viewer. I painted what I loved, and he loved what I painted.

It's as simple and as complex as that.

In search of...

Sunrise...Bethany Beach, DE

I've been on a much needed vacation this past week...lazing at the beach, toes in the sand with my husband Jeff, my 14 year old son Jordan and my 10 year old daughter Lexi. First vacation in over 2 years, I might add. I had no choice but to get away...my wonderful staff insisted. Kicked me right out the studio door with barely a goodbye wave. Can you believe that?!

So, off we went in search of...
  • Grotto's pizza. Went straight to Rehoboth and ordered a slice. Trust me. It's that good.
  • Wind off the ocean. The good wind. The wind that blows fresh coolness, allowing you to sit comfortably on the beach until well past 6pm.
  • Aloe vera gel, to soothe what the wind left behind.
  • Hard shell crabs and a wooden mallet.
  • Peace and quiet.
  • Absolutely no internet access.
  • Funnel cake. Mouthful of yum.
  • Sand castles, sun and big waves.
  • A clean, sand free motel bed.
  • The wish for Sweet Inspiration...

Wishes granted. Thanks for the kick, gals.

"Jennie and I fell in love with the ketubah the second we saw it online, and I think we just fell in love with it again after seeing it in real life. The colors and design are stunning...this truly is a work of art. We are so privileged to be able to display such a masterpiece at our wedding. Thank you so much for your timeliness in preparing this for us. We could not have imagined a more perfect ketubah buying experience."

Who Needs Crayons?

The arts camp from the local JCC visited our fine art studio for a field trip. Thirteen excited 10 year olds filed in to learn first hand how an active art studio operates. Among the campers was my own daughter, smiling big at her old mama.

We began with a tour of the studio. The girls got a chance to see where I paint, how the big printers work, where we wrap finished products to ship all over the world. I shared my philosophy on running my own business (be fair, be honest, mean what you say, work hard and do what you love and it won't feel like work). I showed them lots of examples of the art we create and the products we design. They sat still just long enough to hear our schpiel on the art of creating ketubot for Jewish weddings. We were impressed!

Then, we gave them some hands on training as we taught them some basic graphic art techniques on the computer. It was fascinating to me and my staff to watch these little kids just whiz through the programs with such intuitive ease! They loved the kid friendly graphic icons we had created just for them, and the process went quickly and smoothly.
With their own personal artistic creations finally designed, each camper printed her work of art and then signed, matted and wrapped each one to take home as a memento of their time with us.
A memorable day for student and teacher alike.

Marni and Mike

Our studio philosophy is pretty simple: provide top notch customer service, create high quality gorgeous artwork and help our clients navigate their way through the ketubah buying process with as little stress as possible. We literally work with hundreds of wedding couples each year. Being an artist owned and operated studio, I do try to personally speak with as many clients as I possibly can...often, they are surprised to learn they are speaking directly with me when I pick up the phone. I really enjoy this personal connection...it sets us apart.

Every client is important to me, but every once in a while, there's a standout. Marni and Mike found me in 2004. Mike had questions...ALOT of questions. Like many Bridegrooms, he was in charge of the Ketubah purchase. We debated text placement. We discussed design colors and font choices. We talked at length about ketubah customization. We debated/discussed/talked until the questions stopped flowing and Mike was satisfied and the ketubah was exactly as he and Marni wanted it to be. It was a memorable client/artist relationship, and in the end, we became friends. Almost 3 years later, we are still periodically in touch and Marni and Mike just welcomed a beautiful baby girl into their lives. It's an honor to know that my art hangs in their home and I feel particularly blessed to be able to watch their love and lives unfold.

Here they are, along with Mike's words:

"Sometimes you just see a piece of artwork and you know it's right. In planning for our wedding, my wife Marni came home and said, "You've got to check out this Ketubah I found online from a friend." We both looked at it, and it was pretty easy to decide that was it. The piece (Life Dance IV ) speaks for itself.

Simply, it's just beautiful. Just look at it. The color, the design, the feel, the texture. About 2 1/2 years later, I walk by it every day in our living room and it still makes me smile as if I just received it.

But, beyond the beauty of the artwork (which speaks for itself), working with Michelle was just a pure pleasure. Wedding planning's a stressful time as any couple will tell you. She kept us calm, as we worked through some customization on the design and wording of the Ketubah. She was exceedingly accommodating and flexible, and made us feel like we were her most important customer.

If I ever know anybody looking for a Ketubah, I know where to send them."
