Letting Go...Holding Close ~

I remember the first day I walked into my studio space. It certainly didn't look like a studio then....was a mere shell of an office; drab yellow walls, garish fluorescent lighting, stained carpet. But I was so enthralled with the idea of having a place of my own, that I looked past those things and noticed most of all, the most beautiful quality of light streaming through the large windows. The space felt private and safe and quiet. I knew I could paint here and I knew it would be a solid choice for putting down the roots of my young business.

Over the next ten years, the studio space evolved. My landlord was wonderful...For me, he painted the walls clean and bright and laid down new carpet. He allowed me to break down walls to reconfigure the space. He encouraged me to make it mine. My haven, I often call it. Here, I thrive..happy to be surrounded by my music, art, books, photos, trinkets, shells and handwritten notes from friends near and far. I love that I have a gallery space to show my art and a sunlight filled space to paint. Here, there is room to breathe.

Of course, you can call any space a studio...If you've visited, you know that in many ways it is still just a simple office space. But, a true studio it's become....a creative hub for the many facets of my business, from art production to fine art licensing. A place to share my art, which is so personal, with family and friends. A comfortable place for my staff to work. A feel good place which happens to feel a lot like me. Yes, I identify deeply with this space that I call mine. But, as has been the theme of my life these past two years, it's time again, for a new change to unfold...

In less than one week, I'll be moving on, as my landlord has decided it is time to sell my beloved space. Behind the scenes for the better part of a month, I have been quietly packing, little by little, sorting ten years of my life, box by box. I'll be relocating Shell Artistree, back home for a while. I have a small space carved out there and although working from home will provide some unique challenges, it will also give me time to find a new studio on my own timeline. I'll take my time and look for a new space that calls my name.

For those who know me well, you know how difficult this loss has been for me to absorb...but, as I tuck away the last of my trinkets into boxes and take my watercolors off the walls, stripping the rooms back to the simple office it once was...somehow I feel balanced and ready to move on.  I've never been particularly good at letting go of things (places, people...) that I love. I tend to hold on tightly. This time, I'm going to try to let go with grace and hold close the thought that something wonderful is surely waiting for me right around that corner... ~

Impressions from Surtex & National Stationery Show ~

For all the walking, talking, thinking, smiling and absorbing I did in New York City, I arrived home from the Surtex art licensing show feeling absolutely awake and energized. What an incredible show!

Two years ago, I walked Surtex and observed with a focused eye how a trade show of this magnitude works. It can be intimidating...for one thing, the Javits Center is huge and there are three trade shows occurring simultaneously; Surtex, National Stationery Show (NSS) and International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF). If you walk them all (and oh, you must :), well, trust me, that's a lot of mileage. But, I took my time, took lots of notes and took stock of what it would realistically take for me to exhibit my art in this venue.

Thanks to my wonderful agent, I was beautifully represented for the first time at Surtex this year. And thanks to my invitation licensing deal that I am most proud of, I was also represented by Carlson Craft, Inc. at their impressive booth at NSS. A wonderful experience all around.

Being part of a licensing team is something that is working well for me. My time was well structured and well spent...I had several productive and substantive meetings while at the show and it was thrilling to hear first hand and in real time, how manufacturers were receiving my new collections as well as the collections I launched at the Atlanta Gift Show last January. Additionally, having the opportunity to meet with some of my current licensees was a tremendous gift...even more so because of their enthusiasm for continuing to work with me to build both of our businesses. Truly inspiring~

It is always a pleasure to see familiar faces, even those we only know from twitter, facebook, G+ or linkedin...I enjoyed the company of many lovely people over the course of my three days in New York and I look forward to continuing our discussions as we each make our way in our own art licensing journey's. I'm grateful that our overlapping social media circles make it so much easier to connect and stay in touch.

Visually, the show was inspiring beyond words and I will slowly begin to share some of the images from my time away that caught my eye and made my heart beat faster. An absolute honor to have exhibited at Surtex 2012 among such talented Artists, Illustrators and Designers and a clear and definitive reaffirmation that I am on the right path with my art. I have worked hard to get here and I am loving every minute of it:)

The Gift of Inspiration ~

In addition to meeting some rather wonderful people from all over the globe, one of the beautiful benefits of social media is the daily dose of inspiration that floats past in the stream each day. The Muse is a funny thing....she comes and goes, but if your eyes are open, there's a good chance she'll find you and you'll feel a wave of inspiration. Such was the case when gifted Photographer/Artist/Designer Jon Cassill posted this really evocative photograph of a Magnolia blossom on his G+ page. Languid, was the word he used to describe her and I agreed. I came back to this image several times...I liked the drape of her petals, effortless almost...the softness came through. Jon graciously allowed me to virtually bring his photograph into my studio for a painting session. The above watercolor is the result...and a glimpse at part of a new collection I will proudly be launching at Surtex in New York this coming weekend. My gratitude to Jon, for the gift of inspiration~

Praise, for Alchemy ~

" ...These watercolor designs are delicate and gorgeous, and you probably know by now I can never heap enough praise on hand-rendered fabric designs!" ~ Kim, True Up

Some wonderful words from Kim at True Up...a beautiful blog that focuses on showcasing fabrics, Designers  and news within the surface textile design industry. Loved what Kim wrote about my new Alchemy Fabric Collection from Blend Fabrics.  My designs begin as original watercolor paintings. Each design element is hand painted to highlight the subtle shifts in color and translucency that only watercolor can achieve. The final patterns take on a richer feel as the layers of color and imperfections of brushwork come through.

Honored that my new collection was highlighted by True Up and I invite you take a look through this lovely blog. Alchemy will ship in July of 2012~

Controlled Chaos ~

A little over one week until the big Surtex licensing show.... Here in the studio we are finalizing four new art/design collections that will go to New York.  A big undertaking...there are always last minute changes to the collections; patterns that don't work, others that benefit from a different layout perspective or a change in color palette. I eat, sleep and breathe these designs and am working with my team round the clock to ensure that our presentations perfectly convey my vision. I call this moment in time, "controlled chaos" ;)  And it feels a lot like my photograph of the waterfalls at Great Falls...Momentum carrying us along, can't fight it so just flow with it, keep focused, keep breathing and keep heads above water;)
Send me an inspired thought/word/song/smile to keep me going?....Believe me, it helps ~

My New Fabric Collection, via Blend Fabrics

When I first made the decision to license my art, I had to consider where my art would fit best. It's a challenge for most artists, testing the waters to see which product lines will pair best with their style of art. I knew that I wanted to design for the home decor marketplace and I also knew that my design style, sophisticated with a soft modern, organic feel would mean that my agent and I would have to work a little harder to find manufacturer partners who would appreciate my high design aesthetic. It didn't take long before Blend Fabrics found me and through our partnership, the Alchemy collection was born; seven distinct designs, in two soft color palettes that all coordinate together. The fabric will be available by the yard and sold via major retailers worldwide. Alchemy is scheduled to ship this summer.

I am honored to be designing for Blend Fabrics and look forward to creating with them for many years.
Designing this collection was a joy and I can't wait to see the samples! Will share more when I have them in hand ~ You can read about Blend and see the entire collection here:)

A Peek at "The Wall"...Color, Pattern, Line~

Have you been to the studio lately? If not, I think you might be surprised by some of the changes. Our emphasis has softly slid into a more design focused space. The picture above shows the main wall in my office, where we have organized a few of our collections. I'm a visual gal and it helps me to be able to see all the designs, colors, patterns and lines as they relate to others. As collections grow and evolve, they are added to "The Wall". The bulletin board at bottom left features seasonal color palettes, color trends and fabric samples swatches. Fun, yes?:)

Getting Ready For Surtex

One of the biggest trade shows of the year, Surtex, is fast approaching! Held each May in New York City for the last 26 years, the sole focus of the Surtex show is to connect designers with manufacturers. The show is entirely devoted to selling and licensing original art and design for many different product categories from home decor, to stationery to gift markets. I will be represented there this year, via my agent and so my team and I are hard at work finishing our newest collections...and yes, it is thrilling!

I am often asked about Surtex. I had the pleasure of walking the show two years ago...so much energy and pure inspiration. This video, produced by the folks at the show, does a wonderful job of giving an accurate feel of the place...Have a look! I'll be heading up to New York to meet up with my agent and to walk the show again this year.

Woman (Beauty, Strength, Grace)...

I am always thrilled to be a part of a cause that has the potential to inspire and/or change lives.

In October of 2010, a dear friend of mine, David Sandum (twitter: @DavidSandumArt) organized the First Twitter Art Exhibit to help raise funds that would go towards the purchase of new children's books for the Moss Public Library. I am fortunate to be part of a circle of extraordinarily talented and accomplished artists from all corners of this globe and it was truly incredible to watch the Twitter art community come together, graciously donating quality art towards this beautiful cause.

When David asked if I would consider contributing to the 2nd Twitter Art Exhibit, of course I said yes. How wonderful that proceeds from this exhibit, again in Moss Norway, will go to The Women's Crisis Center, thus greatly benefitting women in crisis (and their children) whether they need, food, shelter or counseling.

My contribution, an original watercolor painting, is intended to honor the beauty, strength and grace of woman at her best. A pleasure, to again share wall space with many special souls and to share my art (this one, pure joy to paint!) for this most worthy cause.

~ Prints of this painting are available...Inquiries: Kindly contact me via email ~

Announcing an Exclusive Licensing Deal with Carlson Craft!

Beyond excited to announce that my entire Bar and Bat Mitzvah Invitation Collection has been exclusively licensed to Carlson Craft, a division of Taylor Corporation which is the worlds largest wedding and social stationery printer! Oh yeah...Wow!

A top priority this year has been to find a new home for our very successful Mitzvah Invitation collection, which our studio has been producing for almost three years. We connected with the lovely folks at Carlson Craft and presented our collection and our vision. They were instantly receptive and welcoming and we knew that we had found the right production/marketing/sales partner for this special collection.

The Invitation collection has been wildly popular with families seeking an artistic invitation, something beyond the cookie cutter invites that seem to saturate the market. Carlson Craft produces a Mazel Tov Album which 7000 dealers nationwide use to show and sell invitations for the lucrative Bar and Bat Mitzvah niche market. Our entire collection will be featured in the Mazel Tov album as well as showcased on Carlson Craft's websites for easy online ordering, available this Spring.

Goals Realized, One by One...

Very proud to share that I am now represented by Jewel Branding and Licensing, Inc, an Atlanta based agency. This is thrilling for all of us here in the studio and one very big goal, now realized. Jewel Branding will represent my art to manufacturers at three phenomenal industry trade shows, the first of which is the Atlanta Gift Show/ in mid January.

Although working with an art agent is not for everyone, my team and I knew that having an agent would free me to do what I love most...paint, design and develop my collections while having a knowledgeable partner to help guide us along. Very pleased with our decision, and looking forward to presenting our agent with beautiful collections that she will be proud to represent!

New Textile Samples Have Arrived!

Happiness is:

Seeing your watercolor artwork printed on luxurious silk and cotton fabric. Can't tell you how pleased I am with the way the colors and designs translate to fabric...The sample fabrics are beautiful!

Now, we simply have to find a manufacturer who agrees ;)

Game on!

Beautiful Vision

One of my favorite jobs as an artist and designer is imagining, designing, and then creating new products. It is so exciting to be a part of the process and then unbelievably fullfilling to hold a brand new product in hand once complete. Wanting to turn some of my watercolor paintings into 3 dimensional product lines, I visited the Surtex Licensing /National Stationery Shows in NYC last May intent on discovering new product ideas for my art. I met the good folks at Rag and Bone Bindery at the show and fell in love with their fabric covered photo albums and journals. Newly inspired, back at our studio my staff and I began working on designing fabrics from my watercolors (more on that soon!) and commisioned Rag and Bone to produce these adorable accordion folding journals with our fabric on the cover. I can't tell you the satisfaction that comes from seeing a product through from vision/idea to its beautiful completion.

Deep Within ~ on Exhibit at The Art League

Some things are meant to remain, forever, deep within.... ~ Shell

Very pleased that my ink and watercolor painting, Deep Within, was juried into the Art League's "Remains" exhibit for the month of April. The Remains show explored the theme of "things left behind". Artists were encouraged to broadly explore the concept of loss, whether a physical loss or an emotional one. You can see more pics of the wonderful gallery space at The Torpedo Factory Art space, here on my Posterous Blog. Hoping local friends will get a chance to stop by the gallery during the month to see the exhibit and enjoy all the incredible art The Torpedo Factory has to offer. -Shell

Beyond the Horizon...

Last week I announced that my company, Shell Artistree, has licensed my collection of best selling Ketubah art to a company called Ketubah.com, an industry giant who will now produce and sell those products on my behalf. This in itself is huge news, but really, it's only part of the story.....

Over the years, I have had success licensing my artwork and I have always enjoyed the process of working with a manufacturer, tweaking my art to fit their needs. I believed that my art could have a broader reach within a variety of mainstream markets, particularly those that cater to high-end home decor and accessories...I could envision it with ease. Fine art licensing was a natural fit for my art.

Wheels in motion, I decided to pursue my vision for creating a fine art licensing division of Shell Artistree. Fine art licensing allows an artist to offer their art to manufacturers for use on their products such as textiles, rugs, stationery products, accessories, apparel, etc. The beauty of licensing is that the same design can be licensed over and over again to different manufacturers and for use on many different products at one time.

To fulfill this vision, I conceptualized and created collections based on my watercolor paintings. This was an artistically prolific time for me. I was painting daily and I was dreaming about textile patterns:) I then worked with my team to design a gorgeous website which would become my online portfolio, introducing manufacturers to my available artwork.

Now, it is with deep personal pride, that I announce the launch of http://www.shellrummel.com which showcases samplings of my newest collections of available artwork, suitable for fine art licensing. I invite you to explore the new website, click around on each of the thumbnail images so you can see full patterns emerge, read the artist statements… It is truly a labor of love.

I believe that the quality of my art as well as my passion for new ventures will carry me along towards my goals and visions. I have learned that there is always a new mystery around the corner, as long as you are open to receiving it.

Floating Along with the Tide...

Sometimes, the only way to move forward is to take a deep breath, thoughtfully reassess, quietly release and then, allow the tide to gently carry you forward again...

When I first began designing Ketubot over 10 years ago, most of the Ketubah designs on the market at that time were rather traditional in design. I was inspired to try something new! Those first designs, which ultimately became the cornerstone of my entire collection, incorporated traditional, biblical symbolic imagery but in a fresh and modern way. This contemporary twist appealed to me as a painter. I liked the challenge of trying to depict traditional and timeless concepts of love, such as commitment, individuality, family and loyalty in an artistic and visual way.

The resulting Ketubah designs resonated deeply with modern wedding couples. Finally, they were able to find a Ketubah that honored both the tradition of the Ketubah as a ritual object as well fulfill their desire to purchase a fine art piece and begin their personal art collection. My Ketubah designs have always appealed to true art lovers.

In the last 10 years my company, Shell Artistree LLC has worked with literally, thousands of wedding couples. My collection has grown and evolved over time, but my personal design aesthetic and commitment to designing beautiful artwork that stands the test of time and that my clients will be proud to hang in their home, has remained the same. It has been an honor, to create for you.

It is time though, to again try something new!

I am proud to announce a new partnership between my company, Shell Artistree and Ketubah.com, the number one Ketubah provider in North America!

As of March 1, 2011, my best-selling, modern Ketubah design collection will be exclusively produced and sold by Ketubah.com. All of my beloved and timeless Ketubah designs are still featured on our newly updated Ketubahtree website so please do browse our Ketubah galleries to see our Best Selling Ketubot as well as my newest Ketubah designs. As always, we will feature an assortment of fine art prints and coordinating art products.

For Ketubah sizes, Pricing, Ketubah Text choices, Ketubah Personalization and Customization inquires as well as to place your order, simply click on the Ordering Information button located on each Ketubah page. When placing your order, please do mention code KTWEB100 so that Ketubah.com will know that my studio has referred you. If you have any questions during this time of transition, please don't hesitate to contact us in our studio. We are here to help you!

As for the Shell Artistree Studio, we are embarking on a new journey, a new beginning that inspires and energizes the artist in me. Many exciting opportunities are waiting, just over the horizon. Take my hand and float along?

More news, coming soon!

Neruda's Memoirs ~ Poetry by Maureen Doallas

Sore Chasing Dreams

Sore with chasing
dreams, I scatter

fresh-bought seed
in un-neat rows.

Ravens, wheeling
through cotton-balled clouds,

show me the meaning
of passion

at ground level.
___________________________________________
Always thrilling, to receive a new book in the mail. Even more so, when the book is written by someone you know and admire.
Maureen Doallas is an extraordinary writer. I enjoy her writing immensely. Her poetic words are clever, smart, thought provoking and the imagery she conveys through her words is vividly beautiful. This is a woman who writes from a deeper place...and she brings you along.

Always happy to support a fellow artist, I ordered Maureen's book, Neruda's Memoirs. It arrived last week and I've slowly been savoring her poetry. A bit unconventional in my approach, I tend to skip around when reading...choosing at random a passage or poem...whatever happens to catch my eye at the moment. Like all good books, I will read and reread over and over again, until I have had my fill.

We made the New York Times!

"...this piece of paper, this beautiful piece of art, is the sign of our covenant.” ~Sally Austin

Christians Embrace a Jewish Wedding Tradition~ New York Times (click to read)

A sweet mention in the New York Times!! The article features Sally and Mark Austin, one of our Ketubahtree.com wedding clients, non Jews, who wanted to incorporate the Jewish tradition of signing a Ketubah (A wedding certificate that combines beautiful artwork and wedding vows) into their wedding ceremony. We were thrilled to be able to recommend one of our couples to be interviewed for the New York Times article and even happier to see acknowledgment of this growing trend. Then again, our studio has been proudly creating ketubot for Jewish, Interfaith and Non Jewish couples for over 10 years ;) We wish the best to the Austin's and thank them, for their kind words about our art.

"If you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it's your world for a moment."~Georgia O'Keefe

The most MAGNIFICENT flowers just arrived in my studio. They are glorious! Fresh and bright and green…and their scent...mmm...like heaven. A beautiful friend sent them my way, bringing me a little touch of Spring as Snowflakes fall teasingly from my sky. I know she will be thrilled to see that I have shared them with all of you ~

Floating out....

Take my hand and sway with me.

I’ll float along in the current of you….

Pull me close,
Feel my heartbeat staccato pulse dance.
Hide me in the folds of your love.
Keep me warm.
Sing to me and share your words.
And when my eyes grow heavy,
Let me rest….

Cover me in cotton and sing me to sleep.

The Kindest Words from Happy Ketubah Clients

"Your energy is beautiful and I am so happy to have one of your Ketubahs." ~Faith

Wow. Sometimes my clients say the most lovely things....xo

Here, Faith's letter in full:

"Michelle,
I just ordered one of your ketubahs for my wedding...I love the design, Life Dance IV. It was hard to choose because all of your work is beautiful. You are also a beautiful writer (I checked out your blog). I was wondering what your inspiration was for the ketubah I chose. I read somewhere on your blog or website that when any individual chooses a particular ketubah, it is reflective of his or her self in some way. Curious about the one I chose and what that might say about me. I like the use of color and the detail. I love all of your work and enjoy reading your blog. Your energy is beautiful and I am so happy to have one of your ketubahs.
Faith"

And my reply:

"Faith,
You chose one of my best selling Ketubah designs. It is based on a design whose edition originally sold out within a few years. Life Dance 4 is so solid…a design I am most proud of. The imagery depicted is all biblical in nature, but with a modern sensibility and I believe that clients who resonate with this special design usually do so because of the beautiful integration of modern imagery with traditional elements of love, family and commitment. I can tell you that I loved painting this and after designing ketubot for 10 years, it is still one of my favorites.
